How to Set Up Ledger Live

Now that Ledger Live is installed, let’s go over how to set it up to start managing your cryptocurrency securely.

Step 1: Connect Your Ledger Hardware Wallet

Before you can start using Ledger Live, you need to connect your Ledger hardware wallet (Ledger Nano S, Ledger Nano X, or Ledger Stax) to your computer or mobile device. Here’s how:

  • For Desktop: Use the provided USB cable to connect your Ledger hardware wallet to your computer.
  • For Mobile: For Ledger Nano X and Ledger Stax, you can connect via Bluetooth (Ledger Nano S requires a USB connection).

Once connected, Ledger Live will prompt you to allow the app to communicate with your hardware wallet.

Step 2: Set Up Your Ledger Device

If this is your first time using the Ledger device, you'll need to initialize it:

  1. Create a PIN: When prompted, choose a 4-8 digit PIN to secure your device.
  2. Write down your Recovery Phrase: This is a crucial step. Ledger will generate a 24-word recovery phrase that acts as a backup for your wallet. Write it down on paper and store it securely. Do not store it digitally or share it with anyone.

Step 3: Add Your First Account

Once your device is set up, you can add your first cryptocurrency account in Ledger Live:

  1. Open Ledger Live and click "Add Account".
  2. Select the cryptocurrency you want to add (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
  3. Follow the prompts to install the appropriate app on your Ledger hardware wallet.
  4. Once installed, your Ledger Live app will automatically detect the account and display your balance.

Step 4: Secure Your Account with a Backup

Ledger Live allows you to create backups of your wallet. Always make sure that your recovery phrase is stored securely in a location separate from your device. If you ever lose your hardware wallet, you can use this phrase to recover your assets on a new Ledger device.
